Armchair History Speakers Series [7:30 p.m.] The Bonita Springs Historical Society con­tinues its annual series with a presentation by Roy McTarnagan FGCU’s first President. McTarnagan starts from the beginning, reflecting on what it took to convince the Florida Legislature to fund a state uni­versity on what was mostly swampland in Southwest Florida. Roy will entertain us with tales of campus life in the early days and give his predictions about FGCU’s fascinating future. History Walks of Bonita Springs [10 a.m. to noon] Learn how Bonita Springs got its name and about many of our oldest buildings. Hear the history of the Shangri La Resort, the first developments of our town, the Goodbread Grocery, our Elementary School (which is listed on the National Registry of History Places), our oldest standing church, local Art In Public Places, the Corner Store, the Fleming House, and neighborhood areas with historic houses.
